Check out these beautiful trails and waterfalls to explore in Hamilton this spring:
Devils Punch Bowl Trail
Length: 5km roundtrip
Time: 1 -2 hours
This waterfall trail starts off with steepness, but don’t worry after five minutes it will be over! This trail offers visitors two separate waterfalls to view: Upper Falls, a 33.8 meter ribbon waterfall and Lower Falls, a 5.5 meter classical waterfall.
The waterfall is encased with beautiful colourful layers of rocks making it Instagram worthy. And, on a clear day you can see the Toronto skyline from the observation platform!
The Devil’s Punchbowl Conservation Authority is part of Dofasco 2000 trail, an 11.5 km trail through upper stoney creek. It passes through the rural countryside of Stoney Creek with a boardwalk trail passing through the Vinemount South Swamp, the biggest natural forest area south of the Niagara Escarpment.
Albion Falls/King’s Forest Waterfall Walk
Length: 6.2km
Time: 2 hours
Finding the route to this beautiful waterfall can be a bit confusing, but once you’re on the right path you’re in for some major hills ending in a stunning waterfall. Unfortunately, there is no trail to the bottom of the falls but the lookout on top is amazing!
Albion falls is one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the region and one of the city’s most popular. The Red Hill Creek in the east end’s King’s Forest tumbles over rock that has been formed into steps and shelves, fanning outwards into a beautiful cascade of flowing water.
This waterfall is visible from two viewing platforms.
Waterdown Trail/Smokey Hollow
Length: 10.2 km roundtrip
Time: 2-3 hours
Want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life? Follow the creek until the landscape changes, and take the stairs down to Smokey Hollow Falls. This hike is beautiful and perfect for new hikers and active children.
This beautiful ribbon waterfall in its leafy forest setting is picture perfect and serene. At 10 metres tall, this short and fast flowing waterfall is surrounded by a great section of the Bruce Trail. It has a rugged footpath tracing its way up and down the ravine formed by Niagara Escarpment.
Hamilton to Brantford Rail Trail
Length: 32km roundtrip
Time: 2 hours
Nicknamed “To Hell and Back”, this trail is designed for the committed hiker or cyclist. This trail starts in Hamilton with a long, gradual climb through the trees of Dundas Valley Conservation Area and up to the farmlands of southern Ontario. After 18km you will pass the small village of Jerseyville before reaching Brantford.
Borer’s Falls Trail
Length: 4.6km
Time: 1 hour
You have to peer through the trees to see this amazing curtain waterfall at the top of the escarpment on Royal Botanical Garden land.
With more than 100 years of history, Borer’s Falls was originally used to provide water for the Rock Chapel Village Sawmill. This waterfall is 15 metres high.
