Man, what a night! Last night's storm was one for the books. If you’re waking up to a yard full of branches or a leaning fence today, you’re definitely not alone. I’ve already seen a few of our Team Smulders prep crew trucks out across Burlington and Hamilton this morning helping clients get their properties back in tip-top shape. If the storm left you with more than you can handle, give us a shout: that’s exactly why we have a full-service prep crew on standby.
The good news? The clouds have cleared, and we are looking at a spectacular weekend ahead. Whether you’re looking to entertain the kids, catch some early-season football, or just soak in the local culture, I’ve rounded up five gems you won’t want to miss.
Here is your Friday 5 for May 22–24.
1. Train Days with Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers
If you have a little one (or a "big kid") who is obsessed with all things rail, this is the place to be. The Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology is hosting the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers for their first train rides of the season. You can hop on miniature steam-powered engines and zip around their outdoor track. It’s a unique piece of Hamilton history, and the sound of those small whistles is pure nostalgia.
- When: May 23–24, 2026 | 11:00 am – 3:30 pm
- Where: Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology (900 Woodward Ave, Hamilton)
- Admission: Regular museum rates apply ($10.50 for adults, $28.75 for families).
- Official Website: Hamilton Civic Museums
- More Info: Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers

2. Touch-a-Truck at Nelson Park
This is a parent’s dream event for burning off some weekend energy. The Touch-a-Truck event at Nelson Park allows kids to get up close and personal with the massive machines that keep Burlington running. We’re talking fire trucks, construction equipment, and maybe even a few city service vehicles. It’s hands-on, educational, and: let's be honest: it’s pretty cool to sit in a fire truck no matter how old you are.
- When: Saturday, May 23, 2026
- Where: Nelson Park (4235 New St, Burlington)
- Details: Check the City of Burlington’s official calendar for specific timing and parking updates.
- Official Website: City of Burlington Festivals & Events

3. eat make share: A Taste of Immigration
Looking for something a bit more community-focused? The Joseph Brant Museum is running a fantastic program called eat make share: a taste of immigration. It’s a beautiful blend of food, crafts, and storytelling that highlights the diverse cultures that make Burlington such a vibrant place to live. It’s a great way to support local culture while learning something new about our neighbors.
- When: Running through May 30, 2026
- Where: Joseph Brant Museum (1240 North Shore Blvd E, Burlington)
- Tickets/Info: Museums of Burlington

4. Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Toronto Argonauts (Preseason)
Football is officially back! There is nothing quite like the atmosphere at Tim Hortons Field, and what better way to kick off the season than a QEW rivalry game against the Argos? Even though it’s preseason, the energy in the "Hammer" is always high. Grab a beverage, wear your black and gold, and get ready for the "Oskee Wee Wee" chant.
- When: Saturday, May 23, 2026
- Where: Tim Hortons Field (64 Melrose Ave N, Hamilton)
- Tickets: Official Ti-Cats Tickets

5. SAFE Trail Hike at Confederation Beach Park
After a busy Saturday, Sunday morning is the perfect time to hit the trails. The SAFE Trail Hike is a guided walk at Confederation Beach Park. It’s a flat, scenic route right along the water, making it accessible for all fitness levels. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the fresh lake air and see how the shoreline is blooming this spring.
- When: Sunday, May 24, 2026
- Where: Confederation Beach Park (680 Van Wagners Beach Rd, Hamilton)
- Official Website: City of Hamilton Events
- More Info: Hamilton Conservation Authority
